Eminem started rapping in high school, but he dropped out of school on the ninth grade. He joined ad hoc groups Basement Productions, the New Jacks and D12. He started performing at the age of 14, in his friend’s basement. At first Marshall and his friend called themselves Manix and M&M, but soon after Marshall started to call himself Eminem. Nowadays he is mostly known only by the name Eminem. At first he tought that it would be easier to start as a battle rapper. Altough he wasn’t immediatly accepted by the underground hip-hop audiences, by time he got accepted and became such a popular attraction that people would challenge him just so they could make a name for themselves.
